Height : 76cm

Weight : 18 - 36 kg

Habitat : South Africa

The African wild dog is one of the world's most endangered mammals. They reside in Southern Africa, specifically Tanzania and Northern Mozambique. They are social and intelligent animals who like to live in packs averaging between 7 and 15 but can be known to be in a pack of 40. Before their population started to decrease packs of up to 100 were recorded. They are very efficient hunters and rarely ever loose their prey as they hunt in pairs and can run long distances with speeds of more than 44mph. Unlike some other pack mammals, wild dog's co-operate and look after each other like a family. They take it in turns looking after their young in the pack with both male and female's taking it in turns to hunt or babysit the pup's. Although they have large litters, very few pups survive. This is down to the threats that they face on a daily basis.

Wild dog's are often shot and poisoned by farmers who blame them for the death of their livestock, which is most likely the work of leopard's and Hyena's. They are also threatened by competition with larger predators like Lions.

Many wild dog's are killed accidentally through traffic accidents. Humans also threaten their habitat with continued growth of population. Through the introduction of domestic dogs by humans diseases are spread from them to the wild dog's.

As human population expands and grows so does the space that humans need. This leads to more agriculture, settlements and roads being built which in turn takes away the space from other mammals such as the wild dog leaving less room for free roam.

Wild dog's are at risk to many diseases including: Rabies, Distemper, Parvo Virus and Adenovirus. They are also vulnerable to infections like Hepatitis, Coronavirus, Herpesvirus etc..
